Atlanta Homes Guru's Home Maintenance During the Summer Tips are here to save you time and money. While homes require maintenance year-round, there are some things that need to be done specifically during the summer. I have provided a few tips to jump start your summer maintenance and help to ensure a safe and happy summer!
1) Check Your Backyard
During
the summer your family will be spending a lot more time in the back yard,
especially if you have young children. Check your yard for new holes or tree
roots someone could trip over, and make sure you do not have any potentially
dangerous equipment such as lawn mowers within easy access in the backyard. If
you have a wooden playground, check the surfaces and make sure it has not
become worn during the winter and created a hazard for splinters. Consider
getting a fence if you do not already have one to ensure your children remain
safely inside.
2) Change Your Air Conditioning Filter
During the cooling season you should change your air
filters once a month for central
and window units to ensure the greatest
efficiency, in turn saving you money on energy
costs.
3) Keep Your Deck Healthy
Decks provide a great place to hang out during the
summer, but they require some
maintenance to
stay in good shape. Visually inspect the boards to look for curling,
cracked, or rotting wood. If you see a board that's
damaged, remove it and replace it
with a board that you've cut to fit the same space.
Go underneath your deck to make
sure the support structure is in good shape, and keep
an eye out for cracked boards
and missing screws or nails.
4) Switch The Blades In Your Ceiling Fan
There's an easy trick to keeping cooler and saving
money, and it's as close as your
ceiling fan. Switch the ceiling fan's blades so the
leading edge is higher as the fan turns,
so you can feel the breeze from the fan as it rotates.
This simple action will push cool air
down, enabling you to set the air-conditioning lower
and save money on energy.
5) Keep Your Grass Longer
We all want lush, green grass during the summer right?
Unfortunately that’s not always
realistic when trying to be water efficient. While
grass needs regular mowing to remain
healthy, keeping grass cut longer in the summer months
will prevent roots from drying
out as quickly.
6) Trim Your Trees
With summer storms comes the potential for fallen
limbs and even trees, which can
damage your home. Keep branches pruned and at a safe
distance from your home, and
if you have large or high limbs, you may want to seek
the help of a professional.
7) Clean Out Your Garage
As the temperature rises throughout the season, heat
sensitive or combustible
materials should be removed. Also, kids may be
spending more time in the garage while
out of school so hazardous materials such as paint and
solvents should be disposed
of properly.
The summer is also
a great time to buy or sell a house, and I would appreciate the opportunity to
speak with you about it if you are interested in doing so. Be sure to check out
